Middle aged professional geek. I know how to... sliderule (a basically dead skill, so it’s cool to me and about 100 other geeks worldwide), table saw, PPK, Beretta, Mac, breathe, think, do light carpentry, plumbing (under protest), electrical, other stuff. Many of these I currently have no room for or no time for.

Stuff I've worked on has gone past Mars and tasted the solar wind, so I'm a bright guy in an engineer's body.

Other interests: Science fiction, cosmology, Constitutional issues, the influence of European and other history on the development and evolution of America, American military and economic dominance in the post-cold war. The influence of the Blues on the evolution of Rock and Roll. The symbiotic connection between the human brain, symbolic thinking, and language. Oh yeah, also: Gun control is about victim disarmament; Razor sharp logic here is an acceptable substitute. Fuzzyheaded thinkers to the contrary need not apply. By a strange quirk, proving fate has a sense of humor, I am co-moderator of guncontrolnow

They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security
- Benjamin Franklin

Pacifism is a privilege of the protected.
- Mike in VA, THR

Those who beat their swords into plowshares shall plow for those that do not.
- Peace through superior firepower.

This is just one more example of what we call the "Sarah Brady Success Story."
Robert Kreisler~ Writing on the Virginia Tech massacre

The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.
—Jeff Cooper, The Art of the Rifle

"Too many Americans have twisted the sensible right to pursue happiness into the delusion that we are entitled to a guarantee of happiness. If we don't get exactly what we want, we assume someone must be violating our rights. We're no longer willing to write off some of life's disappointments to simple bad luck." - Susan Jacoby
